750 YEARS OF AMSTERDAM

Celebrating a timeless bond with japan

As Amsterdam commemorates its 750th anniversary, it's an opportune moment to reflect on the nation’s enduring global connections, particularly its special relationship with Japan—a bond that has flourished over centuries. Hotel Okura Amsterdam stands as an eternal mark of this cultural connection, where the timeless traditions of Japan gracefully intertwine with the vibrant spirit of Amsterdam, creating a sanctuary of harmony and elegance in the heart of the city.

The relationship between the Netherlands and Japan dates back to 1639, when Dutch traders were the sole Westerners permitted to conduct business in Japan, operating from the island of Dejima. This exclusive trading partnership laid the foundation for a cultural and economic sharing that has evolved over the years, blossoming into a rich tapestry of transferred knowledge, art, and innovation that continues to shape the two nations.

Through the Dutch East India Company (VOC), a fascinating exchange of Japanese art, goods, and ideas flowed into Amsterdam and the Netherlands. The Japanese elite were interested in innovative goods, ordering items ranging from microscopes, oil paintings, to telescopes.  In return, treasures such as exquisite porcelain, intricate lacquerware, and captivating prints found their way into Dutch culture, leaving a legacy that endures in the rich displays of museums and collections today.

The Dutch-Japanese relationship has resulted in a unique blend of cultural influences. In our hotel, you can discover many of these influences.

  • Service and Hospitality: The Japanese omotenashi philosophy, hospitality from the heart, revolves around respect, attention to detail, and anticipating guests’ needs, is an integral part of the service at Hotel Okura Amsterdam.

  • Symbolically: The presence of a prestigious Japanese hotel in Amsterdam testifies to the mutual appreciation and respect between the two countries. It's a modern symbol of the historical trading connection that began with the Dutch East India Company (VOC). At Hotel Okura Amsterdam, this legacy is thoughtfully preserved - each of our meeting rooms bears the name of a trading ship from that era.

  • Architecture and Design: Elements of Japanese architecture and design are found throughout the hotel, such as the serene Japanese garden, the traditional decor of certain spaces, and the minimalist aesthetic.

  • Culinary Experiences: The Japanese restaurants Yamazato (Michelin-starred) and Sazanka serve authentic Japanese cuisine and drinks, including sushi, kaiseki, and sake. This offers guests a direct experience of Japanese culture and culinary traditions.

  • Cultural Events: The hotel regularly organizes events that highlight Japanese culture, such as Oshogatsu celebration and tastings.

Although the original trading relationship through the VOC began in the 17th century, Hotel Okura Amsterdam is a contemporary manifestation of the ongoing cultural exchange and economic ties between the Netherlands and Japan.

To experience this unique bridge of two cultures yourself, Hotel Okura Amsterdam is offering exclusive 750 Years celebration packages that allow you to relish in luxury while honouring the historic milestone.
